Marketing a painting business without wasting the season

Painting might be the most competitive trade there is. Low barrier to entry, everyone with a van and a ladder is a competitor, and homeowners cannot easily tell a pro from a guy who started last month. That is exactly why the marketing fundamentals matter more here, not less.

Photograph everything, or nothing else works

Painting is sold on photos. Twenty jobs photographed and organized by type reads as an established company. Four stock photos reads as a startup, whether or not that is true. Same angle before and after, decent light, one minute per job. This habit is worth more to your marketing than any ad budget, and it is the one thing nobody can do for you.

Interior, exterior and cabinets are different customers

Exterior is seasonal and driven by curb appeal and weather windows. Interior runs year round and is sold on prep, cleanliness and trust, because you are inside someone's house for a week. Cabinet refinishing is the quiet one: high margin, searched by people with budgets, and almost no painter builds a real page for it. Separate pages for each, because a page trying to sell all three converts none of them.

The map pack and the towns on your route

House painters plus a town name is how most of your customers start. Being in that map result comes down to the same fundamentals as every trade: a worked Google Business Profile, steady reviews, and a real page for each town you want jobs in.

Most estimates go quiet. Follow up is the margin.

Painting quotes get shopped, usually against two or three others, and the decision takes weeks. Most companies try twice and stop. Automated follow up that runs the length of the real decision wins jobs you already quoted, which makes it the cheapest revenue in the business.

Show a price range

Per room or per square foot. Quotes vary enormously with prep and condition, and a published range stops you being compared against a number that was never comparable. It also filters out the callers you did not want.

This is the system we build and run for painting companies: the trade-built site, the galleries, the town pages, the review engine and the follow up. The full playbook with real pricing is on our painter SEO page. Or start with the free audit and see where you rank in the towns you actually want work in.
